Against Heresies (Book II, Chapter 4), The absurdity of the supposed vacuum and defect of the heretics is demonstrated. - Iraneas. The early christian fathers who made up the religion actually thought they were doing real science and mathematics. They thought all their midrashing(a kind of linguistics correspondence) of the sungods with the Old testament actually meant something. They(for instance Iraneas here) clearly went on to think they could say things about whether the vacuum existed or not!
